Zero Friction Cold Brew Overnight Oats
Brew Recipe · 3 min read
You're already making cold brew. Now make breakfast with it. Zero Friction Classic concentrate poured over rolled oats with whole milk, refrigerated overnight. Five minutes the night before. Zero effort in the morning. The cold brew absorbs into the oats and does the work while you sleep.

The Standard
Oats: ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
Cold brew: ¼ cup Zero Friction Classic concentrate
Milk: ¼ cup whole milk
Honey: 1 teaspoon — stirred in before refrigerating
Banana: ½ ripe banana sliced — added in the morning
Cinnamon: Pinch — added in the morning
The ratio: ½ cup oats to ½ cup total liquid — ¼ cup cold brew concentrate and ¼ cup whole milk. This is the 1:1 standard for overnight oats. The cold brew is half the liquid so the coffee flavor comes through clearly without overpowering. Don't adjust the ratio without adjusting both sides equally.
Why Zero Friction Classic

Zero Friction Classic is a medium roast with natural chocolate and caramel undertones. Those flavor notes absorb into the oats overnight and create a depth that plain coffee can't. It's the same roast we use in the banana cold brew steep — medium roast sits alongside other flavors without competing. The banana, cinnamon, and honey in the morning topping are all working with the roast, not against it.
Use it as concentrate — the same double-strength cold brew you'd use for an iced coffee. If you're already making cold brew for the week, set aside ¼ cup before you dilute it and use that. No extra work. The concentrate gives you the right coffee intensity at the 1:1 liquid ratio. Regular brewed coffee at this ratio would produce a weak, watery cup and equally weak oats.
How to Make It

The night before — 5 minutes:
1. Add the oats. Measure ½ cup of old-fashioned rolled oats into a mason jar or airtight container. Rolled oats only — not quick oats, not steel-cut. Quick oats turn to mush overnight. Steel-cut stay too chewy. Rolled oats hit the right texture by morning — soft but with body.
2. Pour the cold brew. Add ¼ cup of Zero Friction Classic cold brew concentrate directly over the oats. Watch it absorb immediately into the oats — that's the process starting. The cold brew does the heavy lifting overnight.
3. Add the milk. Pour ¼ cup of whole milk over the cold brew and oats. Total liquid is now ½ cup — exactly matching the oats. Full fat dairy gives the creamiest result overnight. The fat absorbs into the oats and creates a texture that lighter milks can't match.
4. Add honey and stir. Add 1 teaspoon of honey. Stir everything together until the oats are fully coated and the honey is dissolved. The honey goes in now — not in the morning — so it has time to distribute evenly through the oats overnight.
5. Seal and refrigerate. Seal the jar or container and place in the refrigerator. Minimum 6 hours — overnight is the standard. The oats absorb the liquid completely during the steep. Don't open it to check. Leave it alone and let the process work.
In the morning — 2 minutes:
6. Pull from the fridge. Open the jar. The oats will have absorbed all the liquid and expanded. The texture should be thick and creamy — not soupy, not dry. If it's too thick, add a splash of milk and stir. If it's too thin, it needed more time.
7. Top and eat. Slice ½ ripe banana and fan the slices across the top. Dust with a pinch of cinnamon. Add a drizzle of honey if you want more sweetness. Eat straight from the jar — cold, no reheating needed. This is the morning ritual that requires nothing from you except opening a jar.
Why Banana in the Morning
Banana added before refrigerating turns brown and mushy by morning. The color goes, the texture goes, and the visual is gone. Slice it fresh when you open the jar — better texture, better color, better everything. The banana is the finish, not part of the steep. Same principle as the cream float in the iced banana cream cold brew — add the finish at the end, not the beginning.
Make Ahead
Make up to four jars at once — one for each weekday. They keep sealed in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Sunday night prep, five mornings covered. Add the banana, cinnamon, and honey fresh each morning. The oats hold their texture through the week without getting mushy — that's the rolled oat advantage over quick oats.
Common Problems
Too thick. Add a splash of whole milk in the morning and stir. Oats absorb differently based on temperature and humidity. A splash fixes it in 10 seconds.
Too thin or soupy. Oats needed more time. Pull it at 8 hours minimum. Also check your oat type — quick oats won't hold structure overnight regardless of time.
Not enough coffee flavor. Use concentrate — not diluted cold brew, not regular brewed coffee. Concentrate at ¼ cup is the right intensity at this ratio. If it's still not enough, increase to ⅓ cup cold brew and reduce milk to 2½ tablespoons to keep total liquid at ½ cup.
Mushy texture. Wrong oat type. Switch to old-fashioned rolled oats. Quick oats break down completely overnight — no amount of ratio adjustment fixes it.
